Disney History Lesson of the Day

My (not so) hidden talent is keeping an extensive archive of movie knowledge.  Pop culture facts are my specialty.  That being said, Disney history is a treasure trove of fun tidbits which I love to share with anyone who will listen.

While listening to the “Wishes” iTunes radio station I came across a song I hadn’t heard before called “June Night”.  This song is by Cliff Edwards & the Wonderland Jazz Band and is on the album “Ukulele Ike Sings Again”.  Cliff ‘Ukulele Ike’ Edwards has a voice anyone would recognize, but few could probably name.  He is an irreplaceable part of Disney history as the voice of Jiminy Cricket who sang the beloved “When You Wish Upon a Star”.  He also provided the voice of Jim Crow in Dumbo.   Prior to his work for Disney, he had an extensive film career which included screen credits in Gone With the Wind and one of my personal favorites, His Girl Friday.

Cliff Edwards’ Wikipedia page has much more info about his early career in vaudeville and on Broadway.  Sadly, his later life was troubled and his body went unclaimed after his death at a convalescent hospital.  Walt Disney Productions reached out to help when they heard of the situation, and paid for his grave marker after the Actors’ Fund of America covered the cost of the funeral.

Cliff Edwards will always be thought of fondly by Disney fans and we are grateful for his contribution to film and music history.

TTFN,
Carter
